Two Toned Stool

You would think with a post title like that I would have a joke ready.  Trust me.  I am holding back right now.  It’s only possible because I am super excited about our next announcement!

As I had shared last Friday, this week we are gonna be ridiculously busy working on a BIG project for a reader-turned-friend.  (We first met in a Target when she said “Hi!  I love your blog!” and I did the whole oh-wait-did-I-brush-my-hair-today-double-check.)  Thrilled doesn’t describe how excited we are!  We are partnering up with Rust-Oleum to do this project and I can’t wait to spill all the details!  It’s gonna be one of our biggest makeovers ever!  We love Rust-Oleum products (um what DIYer doesn’t?!?!) and feel like we have won the lottery by being able to work with them!  We have been using their stains and spray paints forever so while we all wait to see the final recap, I thought that it would be fun to do a whole Rust-Oleum week!  Put about ten more exclamation marks here.

What is Rust-Oleum week?  Well, I went through my computer and found a bunch of recent projects that are using Rust-Oleum’s stains and paints and thought it would be fun to share these with you.  These are brand new to the blog….not re-posts….and each one is manageable and fun and easy!  These aren’t sponsored posts….Rust-Oleum didn’t pay us to blog about them….we are just huge fans of their products.  Imagine me writing love letters to my spray paint collection and you wouldn’t be far from the truth.

So let’s get to it!

Today’s project is a stool makeover!  I wanted a smaller sitting stool for the bathroom….something that I could put near the tub or shower while the boys get sudsy.  I loved the look of this one from Serena & Lily but I couldn’t justify the cost for a stool that would probably get smashed if the boys decided to reenact WWF in the bathroom.  That’s when I had an idea.

I picked up this generic stool from Goodwill for $6.

I had Jeremy slice off the bottom part with his table saw.  We just cut the legs at the same angle that the bottom feet were.  The entire top part of the stool got sanded down so that it wouldn’t be shiny and would accept stain.

I wiped on Rust-Oleum’s Kona stain (it’s my favorite stain color for that rich dark wood!) leaving the bottom part of the legs bare….

After it was dried, I wrapped some painters tape and a bag over the stained part and left 11″ of the wood legs exposed.  Basically it looks like Jeremy wrapped a present.  That’s not a joke by the way.  That’s what they really look like :)

I took the stool outside and sprayed Rust-Oleum’s Universal in satin white on the bottom of the legs.

After removing all the tape and the bags, it came out better than I even hoped!  I shot this picture of it in our guest bathroom but it is a regular feature now in our master bathroom (where the boys all take a bath together).  It’s the perfect spot for me to plop down and wash, dry and cuddle their soft little necks.  Seriously…there is nothing better than a spot that gives me direct access to clean smelling baby boys.  I tell you what.  It’s magical.

Plus, I saved over $50 by DIYing this bad boy!  So next time you see those tall stools at the thrift store, remember to say out loud “I’M TAKING YOU HOME, CHOPPING OFF YOUR LEGS AND SPRAYING YOU DOWN.”  And then make sure that nobody thinks you are talking to the kids…because that could be awkward.

Stay tuned for more!
